What Stripe is and how to set it up in 5 minutes

The Catinfog online shop offers several delivery options.

Stripe is a payment gateway. With Stripe you can take card payments from customers buying through your online shop. Think of it as going to your usual bank and asking for a payment gateway for your shop, except that the bank takes the best part of a month to get through the paperwork and Stripe can be ready in fifteen minutes.

How do I set up Stripe in Catinfog?

To get started with Stripe, go to Stripe.com and click the button to create your account. Enter your email, your full name and a password. Once you’ve registered, go to your inbox, open the email Stripe has sent and confirm your address. It asks you to enter your password again and takes you to your dashboard.Stripe.com
The next step is verifying your identity. Click Activate your account and fill in every field they ask for: a description of what you’ll be selling, your shop’s web address, whether you’re self-employed or work for someone else, your company registration number and the physical address of your shop. They’ll also ask you to verify your identity by signing in with Facebook, LinkedIn or your Google account — I’ve done it with both Facebook and Google. They’ll want your full name, date of birth, ID number, home address, the company name, a real phone number for the business and, last of all, the bank account the money will go into. When you’ve finished, click to submit and it takes you back to your dashboard. Bear in mind that you can’t take payments until they’ve verified your details, and that if anything looks unclear to them they’ll ask for further documents, such as a photo of your ID or your business registration. They’re fairly quick about it, though: if you’re prompt in sending what they ask for, it’s usually sorted the same day.
Next, go to the Developers section and then to API keys, and click Reveal API token. Open a new tab, go into your Catinfog dashboard, then to Settings and the Online shop tab. Scroll down a little and you’ll see that setting up Stripe asks for four fields. Go back to Stripe, copy the Publishable key and paste it into the Live publishable key field in Catinfog. Now copy the Secret key in Stripe and paste it into the Live secret key field in Catinfog. Then go to your Stripe dashboard and switch on View test data, and click to reveal the test key token. Now copy the Publishable key and paste it into the Test publishable key field in your Catinfog dashboard. Go back to Stripe, copy the Secret key and paste it into the Test secret key field in Catinfog.
Now go to your online shop and, just like any customer would, add a product to the basket and go to pay. If you’d rather not register, tick the option to continue as a guest and click Continue. Fill in the details it asks for. When you get to paying by card, choose Visa and enter the card number shown on screen. Put January 2028 as the expiry date and 123 as the CVV. Click to complete the purchase, and if you see the success message, everything is working as it should and you haven’t missed a step. If you get an error, go back over the steps above — usually an error at this point means you still have your identity verification pending with Stripe.
To start taking real payments, go to your Stripe dashboard and switch off test mode. You also need to set Stripe to live mode in your Catinfog dashboard. And that’s it.
